How to Play Steam Games with Quest 2/3 on the KAT Treadmill

 

Enhance your VR gaming experience by combining the Oculus Quest 2/3 with the KAT treadmill to play Steam games. Follow these concise steps to set up your system for a seamless, immersive experience.

Step 1: Prepare Your Computer

Ensure your computer meets SteamVR's minimum requirements (e.g., RTX 2060 or higher).

  1. Install Steam and SteamVR

    • Install Steam: Download it from the Steam website.
    • Install SteamVR: Search for "SteamVR" in the Steam store and install it.
    • Run SteamVR: Launch it once to configure the software properly.

  2. Download and Install KAT Gateway

  3. Connect the KAT Treadmill

    • USB Connection: Plug the USB cable (located under the treadmill) directly into your computer. Avoid using extension cables or hubs for stability.
    • Pair Sensors: Use KAT Gateway to pair the sensors.
    • Charge Sensors: After pairing, charge them fully. Ensure the status in KAT Gateway shows “Connected.” 

Step 2: Stream Your Quest 2/3 to Your Computer

Stream your Quest display to your computer to enable Steam game play.

  1. Install Steam Link App

    • Download Steam Link: Find it in the Quest store and install it.
    • Same Network: Ensure your Quest and computer are on the same router for stable streaming.

  2. Establish Connection

    • Run Steam Link: Launch it on your Quest.
    • Link Devices: Select your computer in the app and enter the displayed verification code. 

Step 3: Configure SteamVR and KAT Gateway

After connecting your Quest to your computer, configure SteamVR and KAT Gateway.

  1. Run SteamVR

    • Launch SteamVR and ensure its status reads “Ready.”

  2. Check KAT Gateway Settings

    • Open KAT Gateway and confirm that the Oculus and Steam support versions are correct (1.0.0.x, not 0.0.0). 

  3. Enable KAT Plugin in SteamVR

    • Access SteamVR settings and enable the plugin kat_insteam_executor to ensure compatibility. 

  4. Configure Game Profile

    • Locate the game profile in KAT Gateway and check the game configuration.
    • Ensure the walk action key matches the movement key in the game (e.g., joystick action). 

Step 4: Launch the Game and Calibrate Movement

  1. Start the Game

    • Access your SteamVR game library and launch your desired game.

  2. Adjust Game Settings

    • Change default movement settings to enable free movement.
    • Set movement direction to follow your head’s orientation for better immersion.

  3. Calibrate Movement Direction

    • Stand still and follow on-screen instructions to calibrate your position.
